Educational Web Applications
The Strategic Partner Library (SPL) is an online collaboration system that allows local organizations to create SCORM-compliant online educational and marketing material available for point-and-click inclusion on over 1500 local classroom Web sites. User-contributed collections of educational resources are classified by grade and subject, and aligned to the Ohio state content standards. Built with "point-and-click simplicity", the resource builders allow members of the local education community (teachers, museum staff, educational resource specialists, etc.) to create web-based content for classroom use. End users (students and teachers) can download files, watch video, add the resource to their personal libraries, publish the material to individual websites and/or blogs, and contact the content creators with questions or requests for follow-up material. Built with a celluar design, the Strategic Partner Library is actually composed of many libraries which have been networked together. This model allows schools, districts, or educational project managers to link their localized and/or thematic libraries with the wider educational community.
Overview of
Soon after WGTE released a content management system modeled on the popular Build Your Own Website™ application, it became clear that a mutually beneficial connection could be made between these organizations and Build Your Own Website™ classrooms. Much of the content being created for their own websites was inherently educational in nature, and educational outreach was a prime objective in their mission. The solution was the development of a master library that became known as the Strategic Partner Library.
The idea was simple. When clients added content to their website with the CMS, they could choose to "promote" that content to the SPL by adding meta data such as grade range, subject, content type, and tags. These options where enhanced further with the addition of an Ohio content standards wizard and a SCORM generator. Specialized content creation tools also evolved over time, enabling the creation of lesson plans and other content that might not necessarily be published to the organization's website. Once these content items (called "resources") were in the Strategic Partner Library, schools, teachers, and students could search for and utilize this content from within their Build Your Own Website™ and Portal Manager accounts. The "master level" Strategic Partner Library (comprised of all participating libraries) could also be accessed from a centralized website.
