Stautzenberger College
In 2002 I accepted a part-time position as a Javascript instructor at Stautzenberger College, a two year technical college
located in Maumee, Ohio. Despite the heavy workload at
WGTE Public Media and Artisan Technologies, I simply could not pass up a chance to teach. I have always felt that the opportunity
to help others develop skills is one of the most rewarding things in life.
Classes were held twice a week, in the evenings, and averaged 10-15 students per class. Many students were recent high school graduates,
though a considerable number were taking the class as part of a company-sponsored professional
development. (General Motors, in particular, sent a lot of employees through the Web Page Design Technician program at
Stautzenberger.) Very few of the recent high school graduates had ever taken any form of programming class prior to this course,
which added to the challenge.
As expected, I loved my time at Stautzenberger. In 2003 I was invited to join the Advisory Board for the program.
After four semesters, however, I realized that I had taken on too many commitments and resigned my position at the college.
For several years after this experience former students would occasionally visit me at WGTE and tell me about their
career progression in web development. It is hard to describe how much those visits meant to me.
Student Evaluations
What did you like about this class?
- The instructor. Mark did a really good jon. He was prepared.
- I thought Mark Harris was the most incredible teacher I have had, especially since being at Stautzenberger. This is surely one of the only classes I've learned more than expected in.
- Instructor, instructor, instructor! Extremely qualified. Enthusiastic! Excellent instructor skills: uses various learning styles, solicits feedback, high degree of interactivity, very reachable and accessible. P.S. keep this guy!
- I already have a good job, which I enjoy. I have taken other training where the instructor did not know the material that he was supposed to present. Nothing is more annoying than to be off the job wasting my time and the company's money. I am very happy to say that Mr. Harris was highly qualified to teach the class. I did not waste time or money, and I learned a lot of skills, which should prove relevant to my job.
What assisted you the most in your learning and understanding of the course material?
- In class instruction from Mark. The book only clouded my vague understanding of the material.
- The instructor.
- Mark Harris gave us plenty of help and resources, plus his own expertise.
- Instructor and his tools. Website & overall access to his skills.
- Instructor explaining assignments in a more simple way to help understand. Using the discussion board on instructor's website to get help from other students.
